Our Story

San Mei and Yuan Bo in 1994

In 1997, Kwongson humbly began in a small garage in Mangere Bridge, Auckland. Immigrant husband and wife duo Yuan Bo Zhong and San Mei Zhu, alongside their son Henry, created their first product, a wrapper for wontons, and began to sell them to Chinese restaurants around the city.

Before long they had expanded their offerings to noodles and other Chinese food staples. San Mei developed the recipes with their daughter Linda, Yuan Bo maintained the machinery, while Henry took it upon himself to deliver the orders, building a strong relationship with local Asian restauranteurs and takeaway owners.

Kwongson outgrew the garage in 1997, expanding to a larger facility run by Henry, his wife Ann, and Linda. Not only was the company expanding but the family too, and so Yuan Bo and San Mei decided to step back to dedicate their time to their young grandchildren.

During this time Kwongson began exploring new products like spring rolls and dumplings, garnering notable clients like Sky City, as well as wholesale to Asian supermarkets, and nationwide restaurant food suppliers. If you’ve been to a Chinese restaurant in Auckland, chances are you’ve tasted one of our products.

These days, Kwongson is still located in Mangere but with a growing staff at a new manufacturing facility. However the spirit of Kwongson remains rooted in the family and the goals of the company remains the same: create authentic Asian food for all to enjoy.
